The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM on Monday following repeated disruptions by Opposition MPs demanding a discussion on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the government’s military response under Operation Sindoor.

The Lower House began proceedings at 11 AM but was first adjourned till noon as Opposition members raised slogans calling for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation. The protest intensified when no adjournment motions were accepted, prompting another adjournment till 2 PM.

Speaker Om Birla, expressing disappointment over the disruptions, urged members to uphold parliamentary procedures. “This is Question Hour. The government is ready to discuss every issue as per rules. Let the House function,” he appealed.

After reconvening, protests continued when it was announced that Speaker Birla had not approved any adjournment motions. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated the government’s readiness to engage in discussion on all issues.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) would meet at 2:30 PM to finalise the agenda for discussions. “It is not right to protest in the Well of the House on the very first day of the Monsoon Session,” he said.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s decision, stating, “The Defence Minister was allowed to speak, but the Opposition, including myself, was not. If the government side is allowed to speak, then the Opposition must be given space too.”

Echoing this, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “If the government claims to be open to discussion, they must allow the Leader of the Opposition to speak.”

Amid the chaos, BJP MP Baijayant Panda tabled the Select Committee Report on the Income Tax Bill, 2025, proposing 285 changes aimed at overhauling the six-decade-old legislation.

The Monsoon Session, expected to be stormy, continues with key issues like national security, economic reform, and legislative updates dominating the agenda.
